Happy Lunchtimes

Our lunchtime teachers, SLT, and pupils worked with Steve Harris from Wellbeing Education to help set our goals for lunchtimes and playtimes. These are:

  • Use "the zone" to provide a new activity every day.
  • Use a positive reward system to notice and reward great behaviour.
  • Show kindness and consideration when playing- I/Of course you can" is the right answer when someone wants to play.
  • Show good manners and table manners.
  • Have a quieter more pleasant dining room.

Implementing these goals will result in us achieving the "Happy Lunchtimes Award"

Below, you can find out more about how our system works.

 Play—The Zone

An area of the playground will be known as 'The Zone'. Each day a different activity takes place, drawn from a wide range of activities designed to appeal to differing "styles" of play. This is to make every day feel special and give children the chance to learn new games and make new friends. An adult chooses that day's activity and ensures that the rules are known and respected.

Rules for "The Zone":

  • Equipment specifically required for the activity in The Zone must stay within its designated area.
  • Everyone can join in.
  • On occasion, we may also ask pupils to help organise the activity. Other pupils should respect the role of these volunteers.

1,2,3 Rewards

  1. Pom-Poms. Adults can award poms-poms freely for positive behaviour during lunchtime. Pom-poms are collected in spaghetti jars for each class. The winning class is announced each week in a celebration assembly. This class will be presented a treasure chest trophy containing a 10-minute class treat.
  2. Certificate. Each adult nominates a pupil for a special mention in the weekly celebration assembly. Certificates include pupil name, staff name and the reason for the award. Where possible, the reason will be linked to our learning habits and values.
  3. Table of awesomeness. Once every half-term, lunchtime teachers nominate 8-10 pupils to eat at the table of awesomeness, alongside one of the lunchtime team.

1,2,3 Sanctions

1. IOA quiet word This is used when somebody behaves in an unwanted way, but unintentionally. This involves telling pupils what is not acceptable without "telling them off".

Adults will:

  • Listen if a learner wants to explain.
  • Remain quiet and calm.
  • Be crystal clear about expectations
  • Leave learners with a smile.

2. Two-minute reflection and apology. This is used when expectations or school rules have been made clear, but the learner decides not to follow them. It is deliberate or pre-meditated misbehaviour. It becomes 5 minutes ONLY if the pupil is uncooperative/cheeky etc. Adults will explain what was unacceptable, and the learner will have a 2-minute 'reflection' accompanied by the staff member. The learner will be asked to apologise and reflect on what they did, accept that they were wrong, show respect and take responsibility. At the end of the reflection period, the adult will end the period positively with a “Thank You”.

If the learner refuses to co-operate and show the adult respect, then the adult will give them a warning. "If you choose not to do it now, it will be 5 minutes." If the learner still refuses, then the reflection period becomes 5 minutes.

3. Red-line behaviours This includes bullying, racism, violence, swearing, outright defiance (e.g., refusing 5 minutes reflection with an adult). The learner will be sent to a senior member of staff. Following appropriate action by the senior teacher, the learner will return to the lunchtime adult, reflect for 2 minutes and apologise. (This will happen at the next practical opportunity, which may be the next lunchtime.)

The adults on duty are seen as lunchtime teachers-creating play, celebrating pupils' good behaviour and resolving issues as required.
