In Year 5, after exploring the work of LS Lowry, we refined our drawing skills in his distinctive style before creating a Lowry-inspired painting, limited to just five colours.

The results were amazing, and they created a wonderful display for all to enjoy.

  • Full Name: Laurence Stephen Lowry was born on 1 November 1887 in Stretford, Lancashire, England.
  • Distinctive Style: He is best known for his urban landscapes featuring matchstick figures, which depict life in the industrial areas of North West England.
  • Limited Colour Palette: Lowry often claimed to use just five coloursvermilion, ivory black, Prussian blue, yellow ochre, and flake white.
  • Career: Despite his success as an artist, he worked as a rent collector for most of his life.
  • Missed Train Inspiration: His fascination with industrial scenes began when he missed a train at Pendlebury station and observed the Acme Company’s spinning mill, which sparked his artistic vision.
  • Honours Rejected: Lowry holds the record for rejecting British honours—he turned down five, including a knighthood in 1968
